Garcinia and Glyburide, Metformin

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Garcinia interacts with whole categories of medication. Glyburide, Metformin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Garcinia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Glyburide, Metformin

Glyburide, Metformin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.
There have been reports of acute hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes associated with garcinia, when taken alone or in combination with other ingredients. Case reports collected from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network suggest this risk may be greater in people who carry the HLA B*35:01 allele.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the simple version: this isn't about Garcinia changing how your Glucovance (glyburide and metformin) works in your blood sugar. It's about your liver. Garcinia has been linked, in case reports, to liver inflammation and rising liver enzymes. Glyburide and metformin can rarely stress the liver too, so the worry is that stacking two things that may bother the liver could add up.

To be clear, this is theoretical, based on how these things behave, not proven for this combo. Still, keep an eye out for warning signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, unusual tiredness, or nausea. If you're considering Garcinia, please run it past your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you have any liver concerns.

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

2 of 2

Glyburide, Metformin also falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS.

Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
HCA reduces fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels in animal models, theoretically by delaying glucose absorption. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Glucovance is a combination of two diabetes medicines: glyburide, which prompts your body to release more insulin, and metformin, which lowers how much sugar your liver makes. Both already work to bring your blood sugar down. The thinking here is that Garcinia's main ingredient, hydroxycitric acid, might add to that effect and push your sugar a little lower than expected.

I want to be honest about the evidence though: this is only a theory based on animal studies, and it hasn't actually been seen in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, glyburide can already cause low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion), so keep an eye out and chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Garcinia.

About Garcinia

What is Garcinia?

Garcinia
  • Weight loss
  • Appetite suppression
  • Curbing sugar and carb cravings
  • Supporting metabolism
  • Traditional cooking and souring agent

Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control. The scientific evidence is weak and mixed, with most studies showing only small or no meaningful weight effects, and rare reports of liver problems raise safety concerns. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have liver issues, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
