Garcinia and Liraglutide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Liraglutide

Liraglutide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
HCA reduces fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels in animal models, theoretically by delaying glucose absorption. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: Liraglutide (Victoza) already lowers your blood sugar by helping your body release insulin when you eat. Garcinia's main ingredient, hydroxycitric acid, has been shown in animal studies to nudge blood sugar down too, possibly by slowing how fast sugar gets absorbed. Stack the two together and, in theory, your sugar could dip a little lower than expected.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. This blood-sugar effect has only shown up in animals, never confirmed in people, so it's a theoretical concern, not something I see causing problems day to day. Still, if you decide to try Garcinia, keep an eye out for low-sugar signs like shakiness, sweating, or dizziness, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially since Garcinia has rare liver safety reports.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Liraglutide page

“If you take liraglutide (Victoza), the ingredient to know first is Siberian cocklebur, the only major-rated interaction of the 239 on this page. Its seeds have caused severe hypoglycemia in people, dangerously low blood sugar, and liraglutide already pushes glucose down.”
