Peginterferon alfa-2b falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.
There have been reports of acute hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes associated with garcinia, when taken alone or in combination with other ingredients. Case reports collected from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network suggest this risk may be greater in people who carry the HLA B*35:01 allele.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: Peginterferon alfa-2b is already hard on the liver. One of its known effects is raising liver enzymes and, in some people, causing liver inflammation. Garcinia has its own rare track record of liver trouble, with case reports of acute hepatitis tied to it. So the concern isn't about Garcinia changing how this medicine is broken down. It's that you'd be stacking two things that can each stress the liver at the same time.

This is a theoretical worry based on how both work, not proven harm, so I don't want you alarmed. But since you're treating hepatitis C and your liver is already the focus, I'd skip the Garcinia and check with your doctor or pharmacist first. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness.

About Peginterferon Alfa-2b (PEG-Intron)

What Is Peginterferon Alfa-2b (PEG-Intron) Used For?

Brand names: Peg-Intron, ViraferonPeg

  • Peginterferon alfa-2b is used alone or in combination with ribavirin (a medication) to treat chronic (long-term) hepatitis C infection (swelling of the liver caused by a virus) in people who show signs of liver damage and who have not been treated with interferon alpha (medication similar to peginterferon alfa-2b) in the past. Peginterferon alfa-2b is in a class of medications called interferons. Peginterferon alfa-2b is a combination of interferon and polyethylene glycol, which helps the interferon stay active in your body for a longer period of time. Peginterferon alpha-2b works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Peginterferon alfa-2b may not cure hepatitis C or prevent you from developing complications of hepatitis C such as cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver failure, or liver cancer. Peginterferon alfa-2b may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
