Garcinia + Sodium valproate
Sodium valproate brand name: Epilim.
Sodium valproate falls into 2 drug categories that Garcinia can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, combining garcinia with other serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Garcinia interacts with whole categories of medication. Sodium valproate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Garcinia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Sodium valproate
Sodium valproate falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.
In one report, a patient experienced serotonin syndrome after taking garcinia extract (60% hydroxycitric acid) 1000 mg daily in combination with escitalopram 20 mg, which had been taken for a year. The patient was switched to sertraline 50 mg daily and again experienced serotonin syndrome.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's something worth knowing if you take sodium valproate (Epilim) for seizures or mood. Our records group it with serotonin-affecting medicines, and the concern is that Garcinia might, in theory, nudge serotonin activity higher. The worry is a rare but serious reaction called serotonin syndrome, which can cause agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shaking, and muscle twitching.
I want to be honest with you though: this link rests on weak, anecdotal evidence, and the case reports involved antidepressants, not valproate itself. Valproate isn't a strongly serotonergic drug in the usual sense, so the real-world risk here is uncertain and probably low. Still, since Garcinia has been tied to liver problems, and valproate can stress the liver too, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
2 of 2Sodium valproate also falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS.
There have been reports of acute hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes associated with garcinia, when taken alone or in combination with other ingredients. Case reports collected from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network suggest this risk may be greater in people who carry the HLA B*35:01 allele.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern with pairing Garcinia and your sodium valproate (Epilim): both can be tough on the liver. Valproate is already a medicine we watch closely for liver strain, and there have been case reports of Garcinia causing hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) on its own. Stacking two liver stressors together could, in theory, add up to a bigger risk.
I'll be honest, this is a theoretical interaction based on how these substances behave, not a proven one, and it doesn't change how valproate works in your body. Still, watch for warning signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, nausea, or unusual tiredness. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Garcinia, since your liver labs may need a closer look.

About Garcinia
What is Garcinia?
- Weight loss
- Appetite suppression
- Curbing sugar and carb cravings
- Supporting metabolism
- Traditional cooking and souring agent
Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control. The scientific evidence is weak and mixed, with most studies showing only small or no meaningful weight effects, and rare reports of liver problems raise safety concerns. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have liver issues, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
