Garcinia and Ticlopidine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Ticlopidine

Ticlopidine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
HCA inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. The inhibitory effect seems to be greater in platelets extracted from diabetic subjects than non-diabetic subjects.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Ticlopidine is a blood thinner that keeps your platelets from clumping together to form clots. Garcinia's main compound, hydroxycitric acid, has shown in lab dish studies that it can also slow platelet clumping. So in theory, taking them together could add up and make your blood a little slower to clot than ticlopidine alone.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's based only on test-tube observations, not real patient studies, so we don't actually know it causes problems in people. Still, with ticlopidine the watch-outs would be things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or cuts that take longer to stop. If you notice anything like that, or you're considering Garcinia, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ticlopidine page

“Ticlopidine (Ticlid) keeps platelets from clumping to prevent clots, so it already raises bleeding risk on its own, and over 200 of the 221 supplements flagged for it push in that same direction. That stacking effect deserves genuine respect from anyone taking this drug.”

Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control. What Is Ticlopidine Used For?

Brand names: Ticlid, Ticlopidine

  • Ticlopidine is used to reduce the risk of stroke in people who have had a stroke or have had warning signs of a stroke and who cannot be treated with aspirin.
