Why this applies to Trazodone

Trazodone falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, combining garcinia with other serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome.
In one report, a patient experienced serotonin syndrome after taking garcinia extract (60% hydroxycitric acid) 1000 mg daily in combination with escitalopram 20 mg, which had been taken for a year. The patient was switched to sertraline 50 mg daily and again experienced serotonin syndrome.

Here's the concern with pairing Garcinia and trazodone. Trazodone raises serotonin levels in your brain to help with mood and sleep. Garcinia has been linked, in a small number of case reports, to a rise in serotonin activity too. Stacking the two together could, in theory, push serotonin too high and trigger what we call serotonin syndrome.

What might that look like? Things like agitation, a racing heart, shivering, sweating, muscle twitching, or feeling confused. To be fair, this is based only on a couple of anecdotal reports, not strong studies, so the actual risk is likely low. Still, since both touch the same system, I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before adding Garcinia rather than trying it on your own.

Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.
There have been reports of acute hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes associated with garcinia, when taken alone or in combination with other ingredients. Case reports collected from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network suggest this risk may be greater in people who carry the HLA B*35:01 allele.

Here's the thing to know about pairing Garcinia with trazodone. This isn't about Garcinia changing how much trazodone is in your system or making it stronger or weaker. Instead, it's about your liver. Trazodone can occasionally stress the liver on its own, and Garcinia has been linked to rare cases of liver inflammation (hepatitis with raised liver enzymes). Stacking two things that can each bother the liver may, in theory, add up.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how these work, not a proven, common problem. Still, watch for warning signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, unusual tiredness, or nausea. Before adding Garcinia, please check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you already have any liver issues.

Trazodone is approved to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This applies to trazodone hydrochloride tablets (brands including Trazodone HCl and Trazodone Hydrochloride) and to Raldesy, the oral solution form of trazodone.

It is not approved for use in children or adolescents.
