Zileuton falls under Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates — the group Genistein Combined Polysaccharide interacts with.

Some evidence suggests that genistein can alter the pharmacokinetics of CYP2C9 substrates and should be used cautiously with them. This has only been seen in animal studies however. (PUBMED https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29387488/)

Here's the gist for combining GCP with your Zyflo. Zileuton is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, and the genistein in GCP may nudge how that enzyme works. If genistein slows it down, Zileuton could clear a bit more slowly and build up, which might mean more side effects like headache, nausea, upper belly pain, or changes in your liver tests.

The good news: this is a minor concern, and so far it has only shown up in animal studies, not in people. Real-world food amounts of soy won't move the needle, and even concentrated GCP may have little to no effect. Still, since Zileuton already needs liver monitoring, I'd give your pharmacist or oncologist a heads-up before adding GCP so they can keep an eye on things.

About Zileuton

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
