Methyldopa falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Goldenseal interacts with.

Theoretically, goldenseal might increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
Goldenseal contains berberine. Animal research shows that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, an analysis of clinical research shows that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone. However, this effect has not been reported with goldenseal.

Here's the simple version: methyldopa already works to bring your blood pressure down by relaxing your blood vessels. Goldenseal contains berberine, and there's a thought that berberine may also nudge blood pressure a little lower. Stack the two and, in theory, your pressure could dip more than you want.

If that happened, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or woozy when you stand up quickly. I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based mostly on lab and animal work plus berberine studies, not goldenseal itself, so it's far from certain. Still, if you'd like to try goldenseal, check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings rather than stopping anything on your own.
