Here's the situation with goldenseal and your oxcarbazepine (Trileptal or Oxtellar XR). Oxcarbazepine already tends to make people feel drowsy, dizzy, or a bit foggy, especially when you first start it. Goldenseal contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine showed some sedative effects of its own. So the theory is that stacking the two could add up to extra sleepiness or unsteadiness.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is: this sedation has only been seen in animals, not in people, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Still, if you decide to use goldenseal, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor first, and watch for any extra drowsiness or dizziness before driving.

What Is Oxcarbazepine Used For?

Brand names: Trileptal, Oxtellar XR

Oxcarbazepine treats partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain). It can be used alone (monotherapy) or alongside other seizure medicines (adjunctive therapy).

For adults, oxcarbazepine tablets, film-coated tablets, and oral suspension are approved for both monotherapy and adjunctive therapy. Oxcarbazepine extended-release tablets are approved for partial-onset seizures in patients 6 years and older. In children, Trileptal and oxcarbazepine oral suspension are approved as monotherapy in children aged 4–16 and as adjunctive therapy in children aged 2–16.
