Here's the thing to know if you're thinking about pairing goldenseal with your perphenazine (Trilafon). Your body clears perphenazine partly through a liver enzyme called CYP2D6, and goldenseal has been shown in human and lab studies to slow that enzyme down. When the cleanup crew works slower, more of the drug can linger in your bloodstream than usual.

For perphenazine, that could mean stronger effects and more side effects, things like drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure when you stand up, or muscle stiffness and restless, twitchy movements. This isn't a reason to panic, and it isn't a guarantee it'll happen to you. But please don't start goldenseal (or stop your medication) on your own. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can watch how you're doing.

Perphenazine tablets are approved to treat schizophrenia in adults. They are also used to control severe nausea and vomiting in adults when other measures are not enough.

Perphenazine has not been shown effective for managing behavioral problems in patients with intellectual disabilities, and it is not approved for dementia-related psychosis in elderly patients.
