Cariprazine Hydrochloride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Your body relies heavily on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down cariprazine (Vraylar). The berberine in goldthread may slow that enzyme down, at least in test-tube studies. If it does, cariprazine could clear out of your system more slowly and build up higher than expected.

What that might look like in real life: more drowsiness, restlessness or a feeling of inner jitteriness (akathisia), tremor, or stomach upset. I want to be honest though, this is theoretical. It comes from lab work, not from real cases in people, so it may not amount to much. Cariprazine also has very long-acting active byproducts, so changes can take a while to show. Please run goldthread past your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Cariprazine Used For?

Brand name: Vraylar

Vraylar (cariprazine) is approved to treat schizophrenia in adults and in adolescents aged 13 and older. It is also used for the acute treatment of manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults and in children aged 10 and older.

In adults, Vraylar is additionally approved to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder (bipolar depression) and as an add-on (adjunctive) therapy alongside antidepressants for major depressive disorder (MDD).
