Chlorpheniramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist for chlorpheniramine: your body relies partly on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this antihistamine down. Berberine, the active compound in goldthread, may slow that enzyme down a little. If clearance drops, more chlorpheniramine could linger in your system. Chlorpheniramine is an active drug (not a prodrug), so slower breakdown means a stronger effect, mostly more drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, or blurry vision.

That said, this is very theoretical. It's based on lab pharmacology, not real cases in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if you're combining the two, a quick chat with your pharmacist is smart, especially before driving or if you already feel groggy on this medicine.

Chlorpheniramine is used to temporarily relieve common allergy symptoms caused by hay fever (allergic rhinitis) or other upper respiratory allergies. These include runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

These uses are supported across multiple products — including tablets (such as Aller-chlor, Allergy, Allergy Relief, Allergy Time, Anti Allergy, and Chlorpheniramine Maleate), extended-release tablets (Allergy Relief and Chlorphen-12), the oral solution Ed Chlorped Jr, and the inhalers ClorRelief and ClorRelief KIDs.
