Why this applies to Mirtazapine

Mirtazapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist with goldthread and your mirtazapine. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 as one way to break mirtazapine down. The berberine in goldthread might slow that enzyme a little, so in theory your body could clear mirtazapine a bit more slowly and levels could creep up. If that happened, you might notice more of mirtazapine's usual effects, things like extra drowsiness, daytime grogginess, increased appetite, or feeling a little foggy.

The important part: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab work, and it hasn't actually been reported in people. Mirtazapine also uses several other enzymes, so one pathway slowing down rarely matters much. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change anything on your own.

What Is Mirtazapine Used For?

Mirtazapine tablets, mirtazapine orally disintegrating tablets, Remeron, and RemeronsолTab are all indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. Major depressive disorder involves a persistently low or sad mood most days, often accompanied by loss of interest, sleep changes, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

The effectiveness of mirtazapine tablets in maintaining a response for up to 40 weeks after an initial treatment period has also been demonstrated. Patients should be reassessed periodically to determine whether continued treatment is needed.
