Naloxegol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the situation with goldthread and your Movantik (naloxegol). Naloxegol is cleared from your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Goldthread contains berberine, which in early lab work seems to slow that same enzyme down. If it does, your body would clear naloxegol more slowly and levels could creep up.

For naloxegol, higher levels usually mean more of its typical side effects, things like stomach cramps, belly pain, diarrhea, nausea, or gas. The good news: this is only a theoretical concern based on how berberine behaves in the lab, and it hasn't been seen in real people. Concentrated supplement doses are more of a worry than tiny culinary amounts. Still, check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Naloxegol Used For?

Brand name: Movantik

Movantik (naloxegol) is used to treat opioid-induced constipation (OIC) — constipation caused by opioid pain medications — in adults who have chronic non-cancer pain. It is also approved for adults with chronic pain related to prior cancer or its treatment, as long as they don't need frequent (roughly weekly) increases in their opioid dose.

It is not indicated for constipation from other causes, and it is not approved for use in children.
