Ospemifene falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist with goldthread and your Osphena (ospemifene). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break ospemifene down. The berberine in goldthread may slow that enzyme down a bit. If it does, ospemifene could clear more slowly and build up to higher levels than usual, which can mean stronger estrogen-like effects and a greater chance of side effects like hot flashes, vaginal discharge, or muscle spasms.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. So far this is only a theoretical concern based on lab work, and it hasn't actually been seen in people. Culinary bitters are unlikely to matter, but concentrated berberine supplements are a different story. Before you pair them, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Ospemifene Used For?

Brand name: Osphena

Osphena (ospemifene) is used to treat two specific symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy — the thinning and drying of vaginal tissues that can happen after menopause. The first is moderate to severe dyspareunia (painful intercourse), and the second is moderate to severe vaginal dryness.

Both of these uses are for postmenopausal women only. Osphena is not used in children or in women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
