Why this applies to Quetiapine

Quetiapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the short version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down and clear quetiapine. The berberine in goldthread may slow that enzyme down, at least in lab studies. If it does, quetiapine could clear more slowly and build up in your system, which can make its effects and side effects stronger.

With quetiapine, that might look like extra drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure when you stand up, or a faster heartbeat. I want to be honest, though: this interaction is theoretical and hasn't actually been reported in people taking goldthread. It's a caution, not a proven problem. Still, since quetiapine affects how you feel and function, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Quetiapine Used For?

Brand names: Seroquel, Dopaquel

Quetiapine treats schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and certain age groups of children and adolescents. For bipolar disorder, it is approved for manic episodes (both as a stand-alone treatment and alongside lithium or divalproex) and for depressive episodes.

The extended-release form of quetiapine is also approved as add-on therapy for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults who are already taking an antidepressant. The regular tablet form is not approved for this use.
