Sildenafil Citrate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the short version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down sildenafil (Viagra). Berberine, the active compound in goldthread, may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happens, sildenafil could clear more slowly and build up in your system, which can mean stronger and longer-lasting effects.

For sildenafil specifically, that might show up as more of its usual side effects: headache, facial flushing, a stuffy nose, indigestion, dizziness, or a drop in blood pressure. The good news is this interaction is theoretical, based on lab work and not yet reported in real people. Still, since timing matters with this medicine, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

What Is Sildenafil Used For?

Brand name: Viagra

Sildenafil treats two distinct conditions depending on the product. Viagra (tablet) and Vybrique (dissolving oral film) are approved for erectile dysfunction (ED) — difficulty getting or keeping an erection. Generic sildenafil tablets and oral film are also approved for ED.

Revatio and several generic sildenafil products (tablets, oral suspension, and injection) are used for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs — in adults to improve exercise ability and slow the disease from getting worse. Revatio oral suspension and injection are also approved for PAH in children ages 1 to 17.
