Why this applies to Solifenacin succinate

Solifenacin succinate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the simple version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear solifenacin (Vesicare) from your system. Berberine, the yellow compound in goldthread, may slow that enzyme down a bit. If it does, your solifenacin could hang around longer and build up, which can mean stronger antimuscarinic side effects like dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, dizziness, or trouble emptying your bladder.

The good news: this is theoretical right now, based on lab work, and it hasn't actually been reported in people. Solifenacin isn't a prodrug, so the direction here is more drug, not less. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two, especially if dry mouth or constipation already bug you.

What Is Solifenacin Used For?

Brand name: Vesicare

Solifenacin tablets (including the brands solifenacin succinate and VESIcare) are approved for adults with overactive bladder — specifically the symptoms of sudden urges to urinate, leaking urine due to those urges (urge urinary incontinence), and needing to urinate very frequently.

VESIcare LS oral suspension is approved for a different use: treating neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) — a bladder control problem caused by nerve damage or a nervous system condition — in children aged 2 years and older. This liquid formulation is dosed by the child's weight.
