There are at least four case reports of hepatotoxicity associated with the use of gotu kola. However, more information is needed to determine if gotu kola was the causative factor in these cases.

Here's the short version: this isn't about gotu kola changing your simvastatin levels. It's about both being a little hard on the liver. Simvastatin (Zocor) can occasionally bump up liver enzymes on its own, and there are a few scattered case reports where gotu kola was linked to liver irritation too. Put them together and the worry is that the strain could add up.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's mostly theoretical, based on a handful of anecdotal reports, so it's not a firm, proven problem. Still, if you take simvastatin, it's worth mentioning gotu kola to your pharmacist or doctor first. And let them know right away if you notice yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness.

About Simvastatin

What Is Simvastatin Used For?

Brand name: Zocor

Simvastatin tablets are used alongside a cholesterol-lowering diet to treat high LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), high triglycerides, and certain inherited cholesterol disorders, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) in adults and children aged 10 and older, and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) in adults.

In adults who already have coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, or diabetes and are at high risk for heart events, simvastatin is also used to reduce the risk of death from heart disease, non-fatal heart attack, stroke, and the need for procedures to open blocked arteries. Zocor is one brand-name product containing simvastatin and carries these same indications.
