Groundsel + Butabarbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital
Butabarbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital brand name: S.B.P..
Groundsel has a moderate interaction with Butabarbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital. Theoretically, taking CYP3A4 inducers with groundsel might increase the risk of pyrrolizidine alkaloid toxicity, such as hepatotoxicity.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS
Why this applies to Butabarbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital
Butabarbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS — the group Groundsel interacts with.
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids, constituents of groundsel, are converted to toxic metabolites by CYP3A4.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
First things first: I would steer clear of groundsel entirely. It contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that are known to harm the liver, and there is no good reason to take it. Here is why pairing it with a barbiturate like phenobarbital, butabarbital, or secobarbital raises an extra red flag. These barbiturates are strong inducers of a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, meaning they rev that enzyme up.
The catch is that this same enzyme is what turns groundsel's alkaloids into their toxic forms. So in theory, speeding up CYP3A4 could mean more of those liver-damaging byproducts and a higher risk of liver injury. To be fair, this concern comes from lab and animal data only, not from people. Still, please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and honestly, just skip the groundsel.

About Groundsel
What is Groundsel?
- Menstrual complaints
- Digestive upset
- Minor wounds (topical)
- Sore gums or mouth
- Mild aches
Groundsel is a common weed traditionally used as a folk remedy, but it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can cause serious liver damage. There is no reliable evidence that it works for any condition, and most health authorities consider it unsafe to take internally. We do not recommend using it.
