Guarumo and Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital

Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Guarumo interacts with.

In an animal study, an aqueous extract of guarumo depressed the central nervous system, inducing significant motor incoordination and muscle relaxant activity. Theoretically, guarumo might potentiate the sedative effects of drugs.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

These medicines (butalbital, phenobarbital, and secobarbital) are barbiturates, which are strong central nervous system depressants. They already cause drowsiness, slowed breathing, dizziness, and grogginess on their own. In an animal study, a water extract of guarumo also calmed the nervous system and caused muscle relaxation and clumsy movement. So the concern here is simple addition: putting two sedating things together could leave you more sleepy or unsteady than expected.

I want to be honest about the evidence. This is theoretical, based only on an animal study, so we don't truly know how much guarumo matters in people. Still, with sedatives like these, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them. Don't change your dose on your own.

About Guarumo

What is Guarumo?

Guarumo
  • Type 2 diabetes / blood sugar support
  • High blood pressure
  • Cough, asthma, and bronchitis
  • Heart failure symptoms
  • Liver and rheumatic complaints

Guarumo (Cecropia obtusifolia) is a tropical tree used in Latin American traditional medicine, most often as a leaf tea for diabetes and high blood pressure. Some early laboratory and small human studies suggest it may modestly affect blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic condition or take medication.
