Canagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Guarumo interacts with.

Some clinical evidence suggests that drinking tea prepared with guarumo leaf might lower blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Theoretically, guarumo might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Here's the simple version: guarumo tea may nudge your blood sugar down on its own. Canagliflozin (Invokana) already lowers blood sugar by helping your kidneys flush out extra glucose in your urine. Stack the two together and their effects can add up, so your numbers could drop lower than expected.

Canagliflozin by itself rarely causes dangerous lows, but if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, the combined effect raises that risk a bit more. Watch for shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or confusion. Keep in mind the evidence here is fairly weak, so this is a possible add-on effect, not a sure thing. If you'd like to try guarumo, check your blood sugar more often and let your pharmacist or doctor know first so any dose changes can be made safely.

Guarumo (Cecropia obtusifolia) is a tropical tree used in Latin American traditional medicine, most often as a leaf tea for diabetes and high blood pressure. Some early laboratory and small human studies suggest it may modestly affect blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. About Canagliflozin

What Is Canagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Invokana

Invokana (canagliflozin) is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes.

In adults with type 2 diabetes, Invokana is also used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in those with established cardiovascular disease, and to reduce the risk of serious kidney complications — including end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure — in those with diabetic kidney disease and high levels of protein in the urine.
