Drug & supplement interaction

Guarumo + Doxycyline

Doxycyline brand name: Doxychel.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Guarumo and Doxycyline in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the label for Doxycyline states a food rule worth keeping to.

Guarumo and Doxycyline

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Doxycyline and Guarumo in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Guarumo safety at a glance

Guarumo overall Use caution It has a long history of traditional use, but human safety data are very limited.
Pregnancy Avoid There is not enough safety information, so it is best avoided during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Avoid Safety while breastfeeding is unknown, so avoid use.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Doxycyline

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Doxycyline is filed under 8 classifications — including tetracycline antibiotics, antibiotic drugs, p-glycoprotein substrates. Guarumo has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate), antihypertensive drugs (moderate) and cns depressants (moderate) — and none of Doxycyline’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

What Guarumo Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Doxycyline. It is the side-effect record for Guarumo on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Guarumo, this list is the first place to look.

“Orally, guarumo seems to be well tolerated when used as a tea. Rare side effects reported in a clinical trial include excessive salivation, heartburn, and exhaustion. Topically, no adverse effects have been reported. However, a thorough evaluation of safety outcomes has not been conducted.”

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Guarumo — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Doxycyline’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Doxycyline column appears here.

How to take them

Some Doxycyline Products Have a Food Rule — Guarumo Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Doxycyline says to take it on an empty stomach. Most supplements — Guarumo included — are taken with a meal, so the easy mistake is swallowing both together at breakfast. Where that rule applies, keep Doxycyline on its own and move Guarumo to a meal later in the day.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Doxycyline products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.

2 DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION Take one Doxycycline capsule (40 mg) once daily in the morning on an empty stomach, preferably at least one hour prior to or two hours after meals.

From the Dosage and Administration section of the FDA label we read for Doxycyline — where that label names a specific product, the instruction is that product's. See the Doxycyline drug page ›

A food rule is not an interaction — it is about how much of the medicine you absorb. The directions that came with your own product, and your pharmacist, outrank anything on this page.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Doxycyline page

“I read the supplement list for doxycycline (Doxychel) as one to approach with real care, starting with its major-rated entries. Heavy alcohol, including beer and wine, adds to the liver strain this antibiotic can cause, botanicals such as Siberian cocklebur can compound stress on the kidneys, and St.”

About Guarumo

What is Guarumo?

Guarumo
  • Type 2 diabetes / blood sugar support
  • High blood pressure
  • Cough, asthma, and bronchitis
  • Heart failure symptoms
  • Liver and rheumatic complaints

Guarumo (Cecropia obtusifolia) is a tropical tree used in Latin American traditional medicine, most often as a leaf tea for diabetes and high blood pressure. Some early laboratory and small human studies suggest it may modestly affect blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic condition or take medication.

Cecropia obtusifolia · Urticaceae · Leaves (most common), bark, and root · Tea (infusion or decoction), liquid extracts, capsules, and dried leaf

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Guarumo is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Guarumo record says about it on its own.

Guarumo: dosing

There is no established standard dose for guarumo. Traditional use most often involves a tea made from the dried leaves, but the amount of active compounds can vary a lot between products and even between batches. If you choose to use a guarumo product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed them.

About Doxycycline

What Is Doxycycline Used For?

Brand name: Doxychel

Doxycycline belongs to the tetracycline family of antibiotics. It's prescribed for many types of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), tick-borne illnesses like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and eye infections. It's also used to help prevent malaria and, in some cases, as a helper treatment for severe acne.

In situations where penicillin-type antibiotics can't be used — due to allergy, for example — doxycycline can step in as an alternative. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.

Doxycyline is filed under 8 classifications, and Guarumo has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — none of Doxycyline's classifications are among them.
