Methazolamide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Guarumo interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of guarumo leaf can lower blood pressure when administered intravenously to rats. Theoretically, concomitant use of antihypertensive drugs with guarumo might enhance therapeutic effects and increase the risk of hypotension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the thing to know about pairing guarumo with methazolamide. Guarumo has been studied mostly for its possible blood-pressure-lowering and blood-sugar effects, and our interaction note groups methazolamide with blood pressure medicines. The idea is that if guarumo nudges your blood pressure down, it could add a little to that effect.

In reality, methazolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used for glaucoma, not a true blood pressure drug, so I wouldn't expect a strong interaction here. Still, both can cause mild fluid and electrolyte shifts, so watch for dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint when standing. This concern is theoretical and based only on animal data, so it's not a big alarm. Just check with your pharmacist before adding guarumo.

Guarumo (Cecropia obtusifolia) is a tropical tree used in Latin American traditional medicine, most often as a leaf tea for diabetes and high blood pressure. Some early laboratory and small human studies suggest it may modestly affect blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. What Is Methazolamide Used For?

Brand name: Neptazane

Methazolamide tablets are used to treat eye conditions where lowering intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye) is expected to help. These include chronic open-angle glaucoma and secondary glaucoma.

Methazolamide tablets are also used before surgery in acute angle-closure glaucoma, when reducing eye pressure ahead of the procedure is needed. Note that long-term use in angle-closure glaucoma is not appropriate.
