Why this applies to Effient

Effient falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Hawthorn interacts with.

Theoretically, hawthorn may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro and animal research shows that hawthorn can inhibit platelet aggregation. However, its effect in humans is unclear. One observational study shows that patients taking hawthorn shortly before undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery or valve replacement surgery have a 10% incidence of postoperative bleeding, compared with 1% in those who never consumed hawthorn extract. However, clinical research shows that taking a specific preparation of dried hawthorn leaves and flowers (Crataesor, Soria Natural Lab) 800 mg three times daily for 15 days does not affect platelet aggregation or levels of thromboxane B2, the metabolite of thromboxane A2, in healthy humans.

Effient (prasugrel) is already a powerful blood thinner that keeps your platelets from clumping together. The concern here is that hawthorn may also nudge platelets in that same direction, so stacking the two could, in theory, raise your chance of bleeding or bruising more easily.

I want to be straight with you about how solid this is: it's mostly based on lab and animal studies, plus one observation in surgery patients. A human study using a standardized hawthorn product actually showed no measurable effect on platelets. So this is a theoretical caution, not a proven danger. Still, since you're already on Effient and aspirin, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding hawthorn rather than starting it on your own.

What Is Prasugrel Used For?

Brand name: Prasugrel

Prasugrel tablets (brand names Effient and Prasugrel) are used to lower the risk of dangerous blood clots — including clots that can block a stent — in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which includes unstable angina (chest pain at rest) and heart attacks (both NSTEMI and STEMI types). It is used specifically in patients who are being treated with a procedure called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), in which a catheter is used to open a blocked coronary artery, often with a stent.

Effient has been shown to reduce the combined rate of cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack, or nonfatal stroke compared to clopidogrel — with the benefit driven mainly by fewer heart attacks.
