Hops + Sertraline
Sertraline brand name: Zoloft.
Hops has a minor interaction with Sertraline. Theoretically, hops extract might alter metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates; however, this effect may not be clinically significant.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Sertraline
Sertraline falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hops interacts with.
Animal research suggests that specific constituents of hops, called lupulones, can induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients with normal metabolism shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, decreases the concentration of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate, by 7.6%. This reduction is unlikely to be clinically relevant.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for combining hops with your sertraline (Zoloft). The thinking is that hops might slightly speed up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps break down sertraline. In theory, that could clear the drug a touch faster and make it a little less effective. But honestly, the evidence here is very thin, mostly lab and animal data, plus one human study where a hops extract lowered levels of a similar drug by under 8 percent. That's too small to matter for most people.
Sertraline isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't need this enzyme to work, and it leans on several pathways for clearance. I wouldn't expect hops to noticeably change your mood control or side effects. Since both can cause drowsiness, just mention any sleepy feelings to your pharmacist or doctor.

About Hops
What is Hops?
- Sleep problems and insomnia
- Anxiety and restlessness
- Menopausal symptoms
- Mild digestive complaints
- Flavoring in beer and food
Hops are most often used for sleep and mild anxiety, frequently combined with valerian, but the human evidence is limited and not very strong. They are generally well tolerated when used short-term, though they may cause drowsiness, and should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding because their safety is unknown.
About Sertraline
What Is Sertraline Used For?
Brand name: Zoloft
Sertraline treats a range of mental health conditions. All formulations are approved for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The oral solution (including Zoloft oral solution) and several tablet formulations are also approved for panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
For OCD specifically, the capsule formulations and some tablet products are approved for use in adults and children aged 6 and older. Sertraline hydrochloride tablets (plain, not film-coated) are approved for OCD in pediatric patients as well. However, sertraline is not approved for major depressive disorder in children — only in adults.

Sertraline Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Sertraline as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Hops — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
