Theoretically, Ilex guayusa may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, caffeine in Ilex guayusa might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans. There is some evidence that caffeinated coffee might increase the fibrinolytic activity in blood.

Here's the gist: Effient (prasugrel) already keeps your platelets from clumping together, which is exactly how it protects you from another heart attack or stroke after your stent. The caffeine in guayusa is thought to have a mild platelet-slowing effect of its own, so on paper, stacking the two could nudge your bleeding risk a little higher. Think easier bruising, longer-bleeding cuts, or a nosebleed that takes a while to stop.

I want to be straight with you though: this is a theoretical concern based on how caffeine behaves in the lab, not something actually seen in people. A normal cup or two of guayusa tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, since Effient is a powerful blood thinner, mention your guayusa habit to your pharmacist or doctor, and call right away if you notice unusual or heavy bleeding.

About Prasugrel

What Is Prasugrel Used For?

Brand name: Prasugrel

Prasugrel tablets (brand names Effient and Prasugrel) are used to lower the risk of dangerous blood clots — including clots that can block a stent — in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which includes unstable angina (chest pain at rest) and heart attacks (both NSTEMI and STEMI types). It is used specifically in patients who are being treated with a procedure called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), in which a catheter is used to open a blocked coronary artery, often with a stent.

Effient has been shown to reduce the combined rate of cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack, or nonfatal stroke compared to clopidogrel — with the benefit driven mainly by fewer heart attacks.
