Ilex Guayusa and Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Ilex Guayusa interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ilex Guayusa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel

Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS — the group Ilex Guayusa interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the effects and adverse effects of caffeine found in Ilex guayusa.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Oral contraceptives decrease the rate of caffeine clearance by 40% to 65%.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Here's the twist with this pair: it's actually your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel in Logynon or Microgynon) that affects the guayusa, not the other way around. The estrogen in your pill slows down how fast your body clears caffeine, by roughly 40% to 65%. Since guayusa is basically a caffeine-rich tea, that caffeine can hang around longer and hit harder.

In real life, that may mean more jitters, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling anxious, especially if you drink several cups. Your pill still works fine for preventing pregnancy. If you notice these effects, just ease back on the guayusa, and chat with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel also falls under ESTROGENS.

Theoretically, estrogens might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.

Here's a small but worth-knowing twist with your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel combo in Logynon and Microgynon). The estrogen part can slow down how your liver clears caffeine. So when you sip guayusa tea, the caffeine in it may stick around longer than usual.

In plain terms, your pill isn't changed by the guayusa. It's the other way around: the caffeine hangs on longer, so you might feel more wired, jittery, have a racing heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or an upset stomach, even from a normal cup. This is mostly theoretical and on the mild side, so don't panic. Just go easy on caffeine, and if you notice these feelings, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

About Ilex Guayusa

What is Ilex Guayusa?

  • Energy and alertness
  • Mental focus
  • Antioxidant support
  • Appetite control
  • Athletic and physical performance

Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.
