These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Ilex Guayusa interacts with whole categories of medication. Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ilex Guayusa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol
Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS — the group Ilex Guayusa interacts with.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Oral contraceptives decrease the rate of caffeine clearance by 40% to 65%.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's something that surprises a lot of people: this birth control pill doesn't lose any of its effectiveness when you drink guayusa. Instead, it works the other way around. The estrogen in your pill (ethinyl estradiol) slows down how fast your liver clears caffeine, by roughly 40% to 65%. That means the caffeine in guayusa hangs around longer in your body.
So a cup or two of guayusa may hit you harder than usual. Think jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling on edge. This isn't dangerous for most people, but if you notice those effects, simply enjoying less guayusa often does the trick. If you have heart concerns or are pregnant, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

ESTROGENS
2 of 2Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under ESTROGENS.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Estrogen inhibits caffeine metabolism.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to know with this combo: it's actually your birth control pill affecting the guayusa, not the other way around. The estrogen part of your pill (ethinyl estradiol) slows down how fast your liver clears caffeine. Since guayusa is basically a caffeine-rich tea, that caffeine can hang around longer and hit harder than you'd expect.
In real life, that may mean more jitters, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling anxious, especially if you drink a lot of it. This won't make your pill less effective at preventing pregnancy. An occasional cup is usually fine for most people, but if you notice you're wired or sleepless, ease up and chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Ilex Guayusa
What is Ilex Guayusa?
- Energy and alertness
- Mental focus
- Antioxidant support
- Appetite control
- Athletic and physical performance
Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.
