Aripiprazole falls under ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.

Khat may affect response to antipsychotic treatment. In a large retrospective study of adults with newly diagnosed schizophrenia, chewing khat was associated with a decreased retention rate with the initial antipsychotic agent when compared with non-chewers, and lack of efficacy was the most commonly reported reason for switching antipsychotic agents among khat users. Until more is known, avoid khat in patients taking antipsychotic agents.

Here's the thing about khat and Abilify (aripiprazole): khat acts like a stimulant, pushing up brain chemicals like dopamine and norepinephrine. Aripiprazole works in part by calming overactive dopamine signaling, so the two are pulling in opposite directions. A large study found that people who chewed khat were more likely to need a switch to a different antipsychotic, often because their medication just wasn't working as well.

In plain terms, khat may blunt how well aripiprazole controls your symptoms, which could mean a return of agitation, racing thoughts, mood swings, or other symptoms you're trying to manage. Khat is also illegal in the U.S. and hard on the heart. Please don't change anything on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
