Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Bendroflumethiazide is a water pill (thiazide diuretic) that you take to bring your blood pressure down. Khat does the opposite. Its main active chemical, cathinone, acts a lot like amphetamine and can push your blood pressure and heart rate up. So if you chewed khat while taking this medicine, the two would be pulling in opposite directions, and your blood pressure might not stay as well controlled as your doctor intended.

In real terms, that could mean your readings creep back up even though you are taking your tablet faithfully. The research behind this is modest, so think of it as a plausible concern rather than a proven one. Also worth knowing: khat is illegal in the U.S. and carries its own heart risks. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making any changes.
