WARFARIN (Coumadin)

Chewing khat might decrease the effects of warfarin. In a large observational study in patients receiving warfarin for mechanical heart valve replacement, chewing khat was associated with an average decrease of about 0.2 in the international normalized ratio (INR). These reductions were seen at two outpatient visits separated by 1 month. Until more is known, avoid khat in patients taking warfarin.

Here's the practical takeaway for warfarin (Coumadin): chewing khat may make your warfarin work a little less well. In a real-world study of people on warfarin after a mechanical heart valve replacement, khat users had INR readings about 0.2 lower on average. A lower INR means your blood is clotting more easily than your warfarin is supposed to allow, which can raise the risk of a clot, stroke, or valve problem.

Now, warfarin is one of those medicines where small shifts genuinely matter, and your dose is tuned to your specific INR target. On top of that, khat itself is a controlled substance, illegal here, and hard on the heart and blood pressure, so it really isn't worth the gamble. Please don't change anything on your own. What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
