Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the issue: lisinopril is working to bring your blood pressure down, while khat pushes it the opposite way. Khat contains cathinone, a stimulant a lot like amphetamine, and human studies show it raises blood pressure and heart rate. So if you chew khat while taking lisinopril, it can essentially fight against the very thing your medicine is trying to do, leaving your readings higher than they should be.

In practical terms, your blood pressure may not stay well controlled, which matters a lot if you take lisinopril for your heart or after a heart attack. On top of that, khat is a controlled substance and illegal here, with real heart and mental health risks of its own. Please don't change your lisinopril on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about safe blood pressure control.

About Lisinopril

What Is Lisinopril Used For?

Brand names: Zestril, Prinivil, Qbrelis

Lisinopril treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older, and can be used alone or alongside other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. The tablet combination product containing lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide is specifically indicated for high blood pressure.

Lisinopril is also used as an add-on therapy to reduce signs and symptoms of systolic heart failure, and to reduce the risk of death in people who are hemodynamically stable (have reasonably stable circulation) within 24 hours of an acute heart attack (acute myocardial infarction).
