Fluphenazine falls under ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.

Khat may affect response to antipsychotic treatment. In a large retrospective study of adults with newly diagnosed schizophrenia, chewing khat was associated with a decreased retention rate with the initial antipsychotic agent when compared with non-chewers, and lack of efficacy was the most commonly reported reason for switching antipsychotic agents among khat users. Until more is known, avoid khat in patients taking antipsychotic agents.

Here's the practical concern with khat and fluphenazine. Fluphenazine works by calming overactive dopamine signaling in the brain to ease hallucinations, delusions, and agitation. Khat does the opposite, pushing out more dopamine and norepinephrine for that stimulant, amphetamine-like effect. So the two are essentially working against each other, and the worry is that khat may blunt how well your medication controls your symptoms.

A large real-world study backed this up: people with schizophrenia who chewed khat were more likely to have their antipsychotic stopped or switched, usually because it just wasn't working well enough. On top of that, khat is illegal here and hard on the heart. Please don't change anything on your own, but do talk with your doctor or pharmacist about this.

What Is Fluphenazine Used For?

Brand names: Prolixin, Permitil, Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine hydrochloride tablets and oral solution are indicated for the management of psychotic disorders. Fluphenazine Hydrochloride Injection is also used for psychotic disorders and can bridge patients to oral therapy.

Fluphenazine Decanoate Injection is a long-acting form specifically intended for patients who need extended antipsychotic treatment — for example, those with chronic schizophrenia who benefit from a single injection that can last up to four weeks or longer. It is not approved for behavioral problems related to intellectual disability, and it is not approved for dementia-related psychosis in elderly patients.
