Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the simple version: prazosin (Minipress) lowers your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels, while khat does the opposite. The stimulant chemicals in khat, mainly cathinone, can push blood pressure and heart rate up. So khat works directly against what prazosin is trying to do, and it may keep your numbers higher than they should be even while you're taking your medicine.

This is based on human research, though the link to weaker blood pressure control is still partly theoretical. On top of that, khat is a controlled substance and illegal in the U.S., so it really shouldn't be used at all. If you're struggling with your blood pressure or stimulant use, please talk openly with your pharmacist or doctor so they can help you safely.

What Is Prazosin Used For?

Prazosin hydrochloride capsules are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medications, such as diuretics (water pills) or beta-blockers.

Managing high blood pressure is part of a broader approach to heart health, which may also include changes to diet, exercise, and other medications as directed by your prescriber.
