Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the simple version: you take candesartan to bring your blood pressure down, but khat works in the opposite direction. The stimulant chemicals in khat (cathinone and cathine, which act a lot like amphetamine) push blood pressure up and speed the heart. So khat can blunt the very benefit candesartan is giving you, and your readings may creep higher than you and your doctor expect.

In real terms, that could mean less control of your blood pressure or heart failure symptoms, and possibly a faster or pounding heartbeat from the khat itself. The evidence here is modest, but the direction is clear. Keep in mind khat is also illegal in the U.S. Please don't change your candesartan on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Candesartan Used For?

Brand names: Atacand, Amias

Candesartan tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children ages 1 to under 17. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Candesartan tablets are also used in adults with heart failure (NYHA class II–IV) with reduced heart pumping function to lower the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization from heart failure. Atacand is specifically studied for use alongside an ACE inhibitor for added benefit in heart failure.
