Minoxidil falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.

Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the simple version: minoxidil works by relaxing and widening your blood vessels to bring your blood pressure down. Khat does the opposite. Its main stimulant chemical, cathinone, acts a lot like amphetamine and can push your blood pressure and heart rate up. So when you put them together, khat may fight against what your minoxidil is trying to do, leaving your pressure higher than it should be.

This is mostly a theoretical concern backed by some lower-quality human studies, so it's not a guarantee, but it makes sense given how each one works. On top of that, khat is illegal in the U.S. and hard on the heart, so it isn't safe to use anyway. If your blood pressure has been creeping up, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

What Is Minoxidil Used For?

Minoxidil tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) — specifically in patients who haven't responded well to other blood pressure medications. They are a powerful option reserved for difficult-to-control cases.

Topical minoxidil products — including solutions, sprays, gels, and foams from many brands — are used to regrow hair on the top of the scalp (called the vertex). Products labeled for men and for women may differ; for example, Bosley MD Regular Strength for Women and Dizop Minoxidil Topical Gel are each labeled for their specific intended users.
