Chlorpromazine falls under ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.

Khat may affect response to antipsychotic treatment. In a large retrospective study of adults with newly diagnosed schizophrenia, chewing khat was associated with a decreased retention rate with the initial antipsychotic agent when compared with non-chewers, and lack of efficacy was the most commonly reported reason for switching antipsychotic agents among khat users. Until more is known, avoid khat in patients taking antipsychotic agents.

Here's the practical concern with mixing khat and chlorpromazine (Thorazine). Chlorpromazine works by calming overactive dopamine signaling in the brain, which is what helps with psychosis and mania. Khat does the opposite, pushing out more dopamine and norepinephrine to create amphetamine-like stimulation. So the two are essentially fighting each other, and khat can work against the very effect your medication is trying to produce.

A large study in people newly diagnosed with schizophrenia found that khat chewers were more likely to have their antipsychotic stopped or switched, mostly because it wasn't working well enough. In real terms, that could mean returning symptoms like agitation, racing thoughts, or paranoia. On top of that, khat is illegal in the U.S. and hard on the heart. What Is Chlorpromazine Used For?

Brand names: Thorazine, Thorazine Spansules

Chlorpromazine is used to manage psychotic disorders and treat schizophrenia. It also controls nausea and vomiting, relieves restlessness and apprehension before surgery, and controls the manic phase of manic-depressive illness. Other uses include relief of intractable hiccups, treatment of acute intermittent porphyria, and use as an adjunct in tetanus treatment.

In children ages 1 to 12, it is used for severe behavioral problems marked by explosive or combative behavior, and for short-term treatment of hyperactive children with conduct disorders. The oral forms are also approved for the management of manifestations of psychotic disorders broadly, in addition to the uses shared with the injection form.
