Hydralazine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.

Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the simple version: your hydralazine works hard to relax your blood vessels and bring your numbers down. Khat does the exact opposite. Its main chemical, cathinone, acts a lot like amphetamine and pushes your blood pressure up. So the two are basically fighting each other, and khat can blunt the benefit you're getting from hydralazine.

In real life, that could mean your blood pressure creeps back up even though you're taking your pills faithfully. On top of that, khat speeds up the heart and stresses it, which is the last thing you want when managing high blood pressure. Worth knowing too: khat is illegal in the U.S. Please don't change your hydralazine on your own, just talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
