ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Amlodipine Besylate
Amlodipine Besylate falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: amlodipine works by relaxing your blood vessels so your blood pressure comes down. Khat does the opposite. Its stimulant chemicals, mainly cathinone, push your blood pressure and heart rate up, much like an amphetamine would. So the two are basically pulling in opposite directions, and khat can blunt the benefit you're getting from your amlodipine.
In real terms, your numbers might creep up even though you're taking your pill faithfully, and you may notice a faster or pounding heartbeat. This is rated a moderate, possible interaction from lower quality studies, so it's not a sure thing, but it's worth taking seriously. Khat is also illegal in the U.S. and risky on its own. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before making any changes.
