Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the simple version: penbutolol (Levatol) is a beta blocker that lowers your blood pressure by slowing your heart and easing up your blood vessels. Khat does the opposite. Its stimulant chemicals, mainly cathinone, work a lot like amphetamine and push your blood pressure and heart rate up. So putting the two together is a tug-of-war, and the khat can blunt the very thing your medicine is trying to do.

What that could look like for you: blood pressure that stays higher than it should, a faster or pounding heartbeat, and less benefit from your dose. The research here is real but on the weaker side, so think of this as a likely concern rather than a certainty. On top of that, khat is illegal in the U.S. and risky on its own. Please don't change your penbutolol, and check in with your doctor or pharmacist.
