Khat and Methoxyamphetamine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

STIMULANT DRUGS

Why this applies to Methoxyamphetamine

Methoxyamphetamine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.

Cathinone, a constituent of khat, appears to have sympathomimetic effects and can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Theoretically, combining khat with other central nervous system (CNS) stimulant drugs might increase the risk of cardiovascular toxicity. Some CNS stimulants include nicotine, cocaine, sympathomimetic amines, and amphetamines.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Let me be upfront here: both khat and PMA (para-methoxyamphetamine) are stimulants, and neither one belongs in your body. Khat's main active chemical, cathinone, acts a lot like an amphetamine. It pushes your heart rate and blood pressure up. PMA does the same thing, and it is a notoriously dangerous street drug known for causing severe overheating, dangerously fast heartbeat, and deaths even on its own.

Stacking two stimulants together, in theory, piles those effects on top of each other. That raises the risk of a racing heart, spiking blood pressure, agitation, and serious heart trouble. This warning comes from how these drugs work, not from a formal study, but the real-world danger of PMA is well documented. Please don't combine these. If you're struggling with substance use, reach out to a doctor or pharmacist for safe help.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Methoxyamphetamine page

“Methoxyamphetamine (PMA) is an amphetamine that leaves very little room for error, since doses not far above the active one can turn toxic, so I read this list as a genuine warning rather than background material. The core problem is stacked stimulation.”
