Paliperidone falls under ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.

Khat may affect response to antipsychotic treatment. In a large retrospective study of adults with newly diagnosed schizophrenia, chewing khat was associated with a decreased retention rate with the initial antipsychotic agent when compared with non-chewers, and lack of efficacy was the most commonly reported reason for switching antipsychotic agents among khat users. Until more is known, avoid khat in patients taking antipsychotic agents.

Here's the practical concern with paliperidone (Invega) and khat. Paliperidone calms down overactive brain signaling to help control the symptoms of schizophrenia. Khat does the opposite, acting like a stimulant that ramps up dopamine and norepinephrine. So the two are essentially pulling in opposite directions, and khat may work against the very thing your medication is trying to do.

In a large real-world study, people who chewed khat were more likely to have their antipsychotic stopped or switched, often because it wasn't working well enough. For you, that could mean a return of symptoms like disorganized thinking, agitation, or hearing or seeing things. Khat is also illegal in the U.S. and hard on the heart. What Is Paliperidone Used For?

Brand name: Invega

Paliperidone treats schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. The extended-release tablets (Invega and generic paliperidone) are approved for schizophrenia in adults and adolescents ages 12–17, and for schizoaffective disorder in adults.

Several injectable formulations are also available, each with specific roles. Invega Sustenna and Erzofri extended-release are once-monthly injections approved for schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder in adults. Invega Trinza is a once-every-3-month injection for schizophrenia in adults who have already been stabilized on a once-monthly paliperidone palmitate injection for at least four months. Invega Hafyera is a once-every-6-month injection for schizophrenia in adults already stabilized on a once-monthly or every-3-month paliperidone palmitate injection.
