Carphenazine falls under ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.

Khat may affect response to antipsychotic treatment. In a large retrospective study of adults with newly diagnosed schizophrenia, chewing khat was associated with a decreased retention rate with the initial antipsychotic agent when compared with non-chewers, and lack of efficacy was the most commonly reported reason for switching antipsychotic agents among khat users. Until more is known, avoid khat in patients taking antipsychotic agents.

Here's the simple version. Carphenazine is an older antipsychotic that works by calming down certain brain signals, especially dopamine. Khat does the opposite. Its main chemicals (cathinone and cathine) act like amphetamine and crank up dopamine and norepinephrine. So the two are basically pulling in opposite directions, and the stimulant push from khat can work against what your medicine is trying to do.

In one large study of people newly treated for schizophrenia, those who chewed khat were more likely to feel their antipsychotic just wasn't working and end up switching medicines. In plain terms, khat may make Carphenazine less effective, so symptoms could creep back. On top of that, khat alone can raise blood pressure and heart rate. Khat is also illegal in the U.S. Please don't change anything on your own. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist first.
