Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the short version: Benzthiazide is a water pill (a thiazide diuretic) that helps lower blood pressure. Khat does the opposite. Its stimulant chemicals, mainly cathinone, can push your blood pressure and heart rate up. So mixing the two can work against each other, and your benzthiazide may not control your pressure as well as it should.

This concern is based on lower quality human studies, so think of it as a real but moderate worry rather than a sure thing. Beyond the blood pressure tug-of-war, khat is a controlled substance and illegal in the U.S., and it carries its own heart risks. If you take benzthiazide, please skip khat and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about safer options.
