Thioridazine falls under ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.

Khat may affect response to antipsychotic treatment. In a large retrospective study of adults with newly diagnosed schizophrenia, chewing khat was associated with a decreased retention rate with the initial antipsychotic agent when compared with non-chewers, and lack of efficacy was the most commonly reported reason for switching antipsychotic agents among khat users. Until more is known, avoid khat in patients taking antipsychotic agents.

Here's the simple version: khat acts like a stimulant in your brain, while thioridazine works the opposite way, by calming down abnormal excitement to help control schizophrenia symptoms. Because they push in opposite directions, chewing khat may work against your medication. In a large study of people newly diagnosed with schizophrenia, those who chewed khat were more likely to have their antipsychotic stop working well and need a switch, with lack of effect being the main reason.

So the real concern here is your thioridazine not doing its job, which could mean your symptoms come back. On top of that, khat is a controlled, illegal substance in the U.S. and raises blood pressure and heart risks. Please don't change anything on your own, just talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.

What Is Thioridazine Used For?

Brand name: Mellaril

Thioridazine Hydrochloride tablets are used for the management of schizophrenia — but only in patients who have already tried at least two other antipsychotic medications without adequate results, either because those drugs didn't work well enough or caused intolerable side effects.

Because thioridazine carries serious heart-rhythm risks, it is considered a last-resort option for schizophrenia, not a first-line treatment. It is not approved for dementia-related psychosis or any other psychiatric condition.
