Chlorothiazide, Methyldopa falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.

Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Your Aldoclor combo pairs a water pill (chlorothiazide) with methyldopa, and both work to bring your blood pressure down. Khat does the opposite. Its main stimulant, cathinone, acts a lot like amphetamine and actually raises blood pressure and heart rate. So the worry here is simple: khat can push against the very thing your medicine is trying to do, and your readings may creep back up even though you're taking your pills faithfully.

Human studies back up that khat raises blood pressure, though the proof that it fully cancels out your medication is more theoretical. Beyond that, khat is a controlled substance and isn't legal to use in the U.S. Please don't change your Aldoclor on your own. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about any concerns.
