ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Amlodipine Benzoate
Amlodipine Benzoate falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: your amlodipine works by relaxing your blood vessels to bring your blood pressure down. Khat does the opposite. Its main stimulant, cathinone, acts a lot like amphetamine and pushes your blood pressure and heart rate up. So the two are basically fighting each other, and khat may blunt how well your amlodipine controls your numbers.
In real life that could mean your blood pressure creeps back up, or you notice a faster, pounding heartbeat or chest discomfort, which matters a lot if you take amlodipine for angina. On top of that, khat is a controlled substance and illegal in the U.S., so it shouldn't be used at all. If this is on your mind, please talk it through with your doctor or pharmacist.

Brand name: Katerzia
Amlodipine lowers high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or with other blood pressure or angina medicines.
It is also used for chronic stable angina, vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina), and angiographically documented coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or an ejection fraction below 40%.
