Nimodipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.

Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the thing to know about mixing khat with nimodipine. Nimodipine is a calcium channel blocker that doctors use after a brain bleed to relax blood vessels and keep blood flowing to vulnerable areas. Khat works in the opposite direction. Its stimulant chemicals (mainly cathinone) push blood pressure up and tighten vessels, so it can work against what nimodipine is trying to do.

In a setting this serious, even a small tug in the wrong direction matters. I'd also add that khat is illegal in the U.S. and carries real heart and blood pressure risks on its own, so it isn't something to use. What Is Nimodipine Used For?

Nimodipine — available as capsules and oral solution — is used to improve neurological outcomes after a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a type of bleeding that occurs around the brain when an intracranial berry aneurysm ruptures. It works to reduce the incidence and severity of ischemic deficits (areas of the brain damaged by reduced blood flow) that can follow this kind of bleed.

This use applies across nimodipine capsules, nimodipine oral solution, and Nymalize oral solution. It is indicated for adult patients regardless of how severe their neurological condition is at the time treatment begins.
