Kiwi and Esomeprazole, Naproxen

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Esomeprazole, Naproxen

Esomeprazole, Naproxen falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Kiwi interacts with.

Clinical research suggests that kiwi inhibits platelet aggregation. Theoretically, kiwi might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Vimovo is a combo pill: naproxen (an NSAID pain reliever) plus esomeprazole (a stomach acid blocker that helps protect your gut). Here's the thing about naproxen, it can already thin your blood a bit and irritate the stomach lining, which raises the chance of bleeding or ulcers. Kiwi has been shown in some studies to make platelets a little less sticky, so on paper, pairing the two could nudge your bleeding risk up slightly.

I want to be honest though, this is mostly theoretical and based on how kiwi behaves, not on real-world reports of problems. A few kiwis as part of your diet are very unlikely to cause trouble. Just watch for unusual bruising, nosebleeds, or dark stools, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated kiwi supplements.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Esomeprazole, Naproxen page

“Bleeding risk is the thread running through nearly this whole page. Vimovo pairs naproxen, an anti-inflammatory that already makes stomach bleeding more likely, with esomeprazole on board to shield the gut, and most of the supplements flagged here could push that bleeding risk higher still.”
